The John Webb Goodlett Scholarship Foundation
In 1961, JohnWebb Goodlett, a DHARA member and former lifeguard, was sailing around the world on an educational voyage aboard the newly christened brigantine Albatross. In May the craft hit a heavy squall and was swamped. Goodlett stayed aboard the sinking vessel to cut loose a lifeboat containing several crewmates. Because of his heroic effort, they survived and he did not.
That year, the Board of Directors of DHARA started an award program in John's name to honor Dominion Hills members, young men and women, who demonstrated unusual leadership and sportsmanship. The program existed for 30 years with 59 young members being recognized for their contributions to the Association.
On October 19, 1999, the parents of JohnWebb Goodlett established a memorial scholarship trust fund to carry on the tradition of recognizing young men and women members of DHARA who demonstrated contributions to the Dominion Hills Area Recreation Association and the larger community. This trust fund is operated and maintained by the Board of Directors. The President of DHARA serves as Trustee of the fund.
Since the program was established there have been 17 scholarship cash awards made, 8 awards to young men and 9 awards to young women.
