Join the Dominion Hills Warriors Swim Team

The Dominion Hills Swim & Dive Team offers boys and girls/men and women between the ages of 6 and 18 the opportunity to compete against athletes from other Northern Virginia pools in the Northern Virginia Swim League (NVSL), one of the oldest and largest youth sports leagues in the country. There are lots of good reasons to join the team.

Swimmers love the team because they get to make lots of new friends, participate in pep rallies, improve their strokes and dives, improve their times, cheer on their team mates, travel all over Northern Virginia checking out other team's pools, wear cool swim suits, get up early in the morning to practice, eat donuts and pancakes, take home an award at the end of the season, and really enjoy being part of a team.

Parents love the swim and dive team because they get to know other pool members, share in their child's success, get up at the crack of dawn to drink coffee by the pool during practice, enjoy sitting in the hot sun cheering on the team at meets (or alternately sitting behind the concession stand cheering while selling burgers and hot dogs), travel to parts of Northern Virginia they never knew existed, and really enjoy the team experience.

The Legend of the Warriors

The team is named for the young, athletic members of the Indian tribes who in the past roamed this area. They would be called by Chief Powhatan to meet periodically at the natural spring currently enclosed in a spring house in the valley at the rear of the Dominion Hills’ property. The spring appears on the first maps of the area. Dominion Hills Warriors draw their strength from a long line of warriors, and their speed from the “fast water” of the spring.

Mini Warriors Program

The mini warriors are the youngest members of the swim team. They are swimmers that are interested in joining the swim team but might not yet be able to tolerate a practice that consists of swimming up and down the lanes for an extended period of time.

Young swimmers wishing to be mini warriors are evaluated by the mini warrior coach to determine if they have the basic skills needed to join the mini warriors.  We stress this is an evaluation and not a tryout.  Any swimmer capable of swimming the length of the pool is mini warrior eligible. Those swimmers who are not quite ready for the mini-warriors are referred to the DH swim lesson program and encouraged to return the following year to be evaluated again for the mini warrior program.

Mini Warrior evaluations will be conducted on 14 & 21 May starting at 1000 at the Dominion Hills Pool.

A parent should be present at the evaluation session and your child will be asked to demonstrate their ability to swim. The kids will get in the lap pool near the baby pool side, close to the wall. Each child will swim one at a time. They will first be asked to swim freestyle as far as they can go (but not more than one lap). They will then be allowed a short break before being asked to swim the back stroke (again not more than one lap). If they can swim each stroke at least one lap they are ready for the regular practice sessions. Since they are being evaluated for the mini warrior program we expect most will not be able to swim a full lap of either stroke. Neither you nor they should be upset if they can't swim the length of the pool.  Although the pool is heated the water may be cool.

DH Swim Team Parents Organizational Meeting 2016

The Swim Team Parents Organizational Meeting will be held in the DHARA Community House on Saturday May 14 at 9:00 a.m. Parents of current and potential swim team members are all welcome and encouraged to attend!
